Dear Urban Trials Challengers,
As some of you may know, I came to the U.S. from South Africa in 2015 to follow my dream of launching The Urban Trials... So far, it has been one wild, entrepreneurial ride!
Today I have taken the decision to postpone The Urban Trials to 2018 for both business and personal reasons, and provide you a brief explanation. I hope you will support it.
From a business perspective, we are a tiny startup (less than 10 people) entering a highly competitive industry, but with the unique concept of a technology powered obstacle fun-run. We caught the eye of a number of sponsors, including a major cellphone manufacturer, who we are now working with, on a global partnership. This partnership will allow us to re-enter the market at a more competitive ticket price, and also launch The Urban Trials across Africa, Asia and Europe, along with the U.S. We are super excited by this huge opportunity, because it means companies also believe the future is in mass participation, technology powered, family-friendly events.
From a personal perspective, a lot has changed since November 2016, and my future in the U.S. is dependent on fulfilling some pretty demanding visa requirements. I continue working extremely hard to meet to my obligations, including creating U.S. jobs, paying taxes etc., but there are never any guarantees. So, it makes sense to rather be safe, and honest with everyone, in case things change unexpectedly.
Good news is, our company has a number of successful events like the Put Foot Rally, (the largest road trip adventure rally in Africa) and the Wakati Challenge, (an exciting public transport race where teams of 3 compete for $15,000 prize money). So we are not going anywhere or 'closing down'. Instead we will be refunding everyone who purchased an Urban Trials ticket, IN FULL, including all service fees etc. No exceptions.
- If you purchased a ticket via ShowClix, a check is in the mail today and will arrive within the next 2-3 days. *They do not have an auto refund to card system.
- If you purchased a ticket via Events.com, your refund will be actioned tonight, and will be processed automatically back to your card within 5-10 business days.
Please accept my apologies, especially to the hundred or so people who tried to sign up over the last few days and to everyone who was looking forward to a day of fun with the family.
The Urban Trials will be back, and I will let you know our 2018 plans as soon as they are finalized.

The Urban Trials
The Urban Trials series of obstacle races announced the acquisition of tangible and intangible assets from the recently closed BattleFrog Series.
“I’m pleased to announce The Urban Trials has acquired a significant amount of assets from the BattleFrog Series, which ended its operations at the end of 2016,” said Daryn Hillhouse, CEO and founder of The Urban Trials. “This acquisition allows us to expand our vision of staging an incredible, mass participation, family-friendly, obstacle fun run series, and we look forward to welcoming all the BattleFrog fans to the Urban Trials brand.”
The negotiations with BattleFrog management were conducted by Mr. Hillhouse and Garnet Heraman, an Urban Trials board member and strategic advisor. “The acquisition includes tangible assets such as state-of-the-art aluminum obstacles, as well as certain intangible assets such as the BattleFrog Facebook company page,” said Mr. Heraman. “This gives us a great head start on establishing a national footprint in 2017.”
